WRITTEN BY EXPERTS IN CHILD PSYCHOLOGY
Panda Momo values his toys very much and feels anxious when someone else plays with them. At his birthday party, Momo’s friend Lana took his favourite teddy bear. When Momo noticed that his plush toy was missing, he became very angry. He snatched the toy out of Lana’s hands and pushed her so hard that she fell on the floor.
Momo had a hard time dealing with uncomfortable emotions of worry, anxiety, fear, and anger. With his dad’s help, he learned a technique for calming intense emotional reactions and self-regulation, which we call the sensory tent. Only when he calmed down, he could become aware of his choices, i.e., that he could choose different or more efficient behaviours when faced with similar situations in the future.
The Challenging Behaviors picture book series brings stories for children that teach them to recognize unpleasant emotions when they appear in the body, to calm down, and to choose more acceptable ways of behaving. Picture books also contain advice for parents, educators, and caregivers, explaining the role of adults in the process of co-regulation of the emotions that are behind challenging behaviors and what happens in the child’s neurophysiology when we notice them.
