SPECIAL MENTION FROM THE JURY – GRIGOR VITEZ AWARD 2019
This is the story of Mr. Choice and Miss Consequence. We’ll call them Mr. Cho and Miss Con because they prefer to be called that. Cho and Con are an unusual couple. No one has ever seen them, but everyone knows them. Interesting, isn’t it? Cho and Con are never apart. Even the birds on the branch know that where Mr. Cho is, Miss Con is hanging around somewhere. Sometimes Mr. Cho sometimes chooses to skip breakfast or not do his homework so Miss Con has to introduce him to Mr. Growl of Miss Fail. But sometimes Mr. Cho chooses to be kind and share with others, so Miss Con has no choice but to cheer him up with Ms. Happiness, laughter, and warmth in his heart.
The story Mr. Cho and Miss Con is part of a series of picture books about the development of socio-emotional competencies in children. Little readers will learn that every coice comes with consequence, good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant.
It is a story about responsibility, or rather, about developing independence, which is a prerequisite for taking on the responsibility of carrying out everyday tasks. Cho and Con teach children that we always have a choice and that the decisions we make have consequences. Learning responsibility from experience also includes accepting mistakes and being willing to try again.
If we know that we have a choice and rights in something, we must know that we also have a responsibilities. Of course, children don’t carry the same responsibilities as adults, however, it’s important for them to learn from an early age that their actions have different consequences.
Taking responsibility is the key to achieving lasting happiness and success, because it gives us the power to take our lives into our own hands and thus not depend on external factors.
Therefore, it’s important to teach children from an early age to take responsibility for their actions, according to their age, virtues, skills, competencies and knowledge.
