SPECIAL MENTION FROM THE JURY – GRIGOR VITEZ AWARD 2019
Maurice was a first-grade student and in every way, he was an ordinary boy, except that he got very, very angry very often. When you asked Maurice why he was so angry, he wouldn’t know how to answer. He would simply be overwhelmed by this strong, unpleasant feeling, his head would buzz and hum, and something would make him fight and get angry at everyone around him. That’s why the children in the class called him Maurice Angerpeace, which, of course, made him even angrier. One day he got so angry that his teacher had to send him to the school library to calm down. There, something strange happened to him. He met an unusual creature who introduced himself as Mr. Angerpeace and who helped him transform his anger into peace.
The story Maurice Angerpeace is part of a series of picture books about the development of socio-emotional competencies in children. It is a story about self-control or self-regulation of emotions.
The ability to manage one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in everyday situations is one of the most important components of children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development. Maurice and Mr. Angerpeace will teach children how to regain calm and control over their thoughts and behaviours in states of high arousal and overwhelming unpleasant emotions.
Self-regulatiob is learned from a young age, and its goal is to stop impulsive responses, resist environmental triggers, and persist in tasks that need to be completed.
A child must adapt to different environments every day (home routines, school or kindergarten, extracurricular activities, etc.) and, thanks to the control of internal states, can function adequately in society. Learning self-regulation is a process that allows a child to achieve goals, communicate prosocially with others, and be involved in independent learning.
