WRITTEN BY EXPERTS IN CHILD PSYCHOLOGY
Panda Momo likes to draw and colour colouring books and he likes to do it in peace and quiet. But one afternoon his sister was very noisy and restless and bothered Momo in their shared room. Momo got very angry, and brother and sister soon had a big fight and started shouting and saying mean things to each other.
Momo had a hard time dealing with feelings of hypersensitivity, irritability, and consequently anger and frustration, so with the help of his grandmother, he learned a technique for calming intense emotional reactions and self-regulation of emotions, which we call the five-senses technique. Only when he calmed down, he could become aware of his choices, that is, that he could choose different or more efficient behaviours in similar situations in the future.
The Challenging Behaviors picture book series brings stories for children that teach them to recognize unpleasant emotions when they appear in the body, to calm down, and to choose more acceptable ways of behaving. Picture books also contain advice for parents, educators, and caregivers, explaining the role of adults in the process of co-regulation of the emotions that are behind challenging behaviors and what happens in the child’s neurophysiology when we notice them.
